Waiting on Wunderkind: The story behind Matter to One and Our Adoption
We are waiting on our wunderkind. In German, wunderkind means “miracle child.” We believe that every child is a miracle and this is the story of our adoption journey for our miracle child.
We met through a very brilliant mutual friend (you know who you are) who recognized that, although we were from two different countries – Tobias from Germany, and Kelli from the United States – we were meant to be together.
On our wedding day, we walked down an aisle, stood before God, family and friends and made a vow that we would live life together for as long as life persists, sharing the adventure of everyday as it comes from the hand of God.
One of the dreams we shared was to have a big family. Even when we were single – long before we knew each other – we both wanted to one day adopt as part of building a family. For us, adoption was never a “back-up” plan, a plan “B.”
We know adoption is in the heart of God. Adoption matters. It redeems a life. It is costly – in more ways than one. It binds you to another life forever. It chooses another, prefers another and lavishes another with unconditional love. And, it is worth it all.
In the process of starting a family, we were told that having children of our own bodies would not be possible without serious medical intervention. We had to grieve this loss as the loss of children we held in our hearts, but would never hold in our arms. Yet, even in this loss, we knew that some of our children were still there, waiting for us – those precious little ones who matter so much to us and so much to God.
Each child must know that he or she is a miracle. That since the beginning of the world there hasn’t been, and until the end of the world there will not be, another child like him or her. Each one matters.
So began our adoption journey. We initially were adopting from Ethiopia, but have changed our process. We will complete a domestic adoption first, and then pursue adopting from Ethiopia.
We cannot wait to bring our child home. This blog is our way of sharing this process, our thoughts and experiences, and connecting with others who are walking a similar road. We are excited for what lies ahead as we actively wait on our wunderkind. We thank you for your interest in our journey. We would appreciate your prayers and emails, as well as financial support.
Things pass away. People last forever. Choose to Matter to One.
